What To Expect In Dark Souls 2

Back in October, some lucky 5000 players were able to test a preview of Dark Souls 2. If the release of Dark Souls 2 beta is a sign of how good the actual game is going to be, then be prepared to bathe in a tub full of awesome. Even if Dark Souls’ director, Hidetaka Miyazaki, is no longer at the helm, From Software’s most beloved gaming universe is in good hands with Yui Tanimura and Tomohiro Shibuya

Although the creators have hinted that the protagonist will be cursed with a dark ring, not much is known about Dark Souls 2’s storyline yet. You can play as a soldier, warrior, sorcerer, temple knight, dual swordsman, and a hunter. All characters are male with no option to change their genders (apologies to female gamers!). Much of the plot will be revealed through its game play by interacting with NPCs rather than cut scenes and videos.

From Software has always been known for the difficulty of their games. True to form, Dark Souls 2 beta proved to be no different. If being angry and frustrated while playing is your thing, then this game won’t disappoint. Simply put: You will die. Probably, not just once either, but multiple times.

First off, the game is dark. Not dark emotionally, but just dark on your computer screen. There are scenes that are just completely pitch black. One wrong turn could send you falling off of a large pit. You won’t even survive the environment without lighting a torch. Then again, lighting a torch means dropping your shield which will leave you vulnerable to your high damaging enemies. Ranged players like the sorcerer and the hunter will have a definite advantage. The good thing about the beta version is that it has a lot of safe haven bonfires for you to rest in.

Dark Souls 2 beta doesn’t even care about giving newly created characters a break. Enemies will come at you at full force and by the hoards. A lot of them even have the capability of releasing powerful ranged weapons. Forget about saving up your Estus Flasks and just use them when you can. Counter attacks for weaker characters are missing in the beta version. If the creators decide to leave it out in the final version, then running will be your best friend. Forget about doing the hard mode. All of the monsters there can own you in one shot.

Rumors have it that Tanimura is still not satisfied with the level of difficulty of Dark Souls 2 beta. The dude thinks it’s all still too easy, so expect item drops to decrease and some bonfire locations to disappear. However, a higher level of difficulty of the game can have its advantages. For one, it forces you to be a thinking player. You definitely need to consider your strategies well and specialize at a particular skill. Second, it makes for a more interactive game play. Things like harvesting human effigies and summoning will become more pertinent to your survival.

The multiplayer option of Dark Souls 2 beta is still a bit sketchy but forgivable. Players will be able to summon each other which will be a great advantage when it comes to the big bosses. Sometimes, in the beta version, it’s hard to tell when you find yourself in a new location after being summoned. How annoying this will get will all depend on the final release of the game. It is beta after all.

When it comes to graphics, needless to say, Dark Souls 2 is simply stunning. The annoying tumbling dead bodies from the previous games are gone. All the characters are beautifully designed and highly detailed. The background really makes you feel like you’re a part of the Dark Souls universe. Even the way your torch flickers and lights up the surrounding area looks realistic enough.

Sadly, for owners of newly released consoles, Dark Souls 2 will only be released for PC, Xbox 360, Playstation 3. No Playstation 4 and Xbox One at the moment but the guys at From Software haven’t ruled out a late release for these consoles. If not, then there’s always good old, reliable PC. Whatever happens, when March rolls in and From Software announces the game’s release, make sure you grab yourself a copy. It’s guaranteed to be the biggest game you’ll ever play for 2014.
